"Texas A&M is a unique and special environment. Through my graduate program I was introduced to professional leaders in Veterinary Sciences who have taught me critical thinking and leadership skills. I was exposed to an environment that allowed for independent development, has an amazing team spirit and provides the potential for life long collaborations." -Jan S. Suchodolski, DVM, Ph.D. '05
Jan S. Suchodolski is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences and the Associate Director of the Gastrointestinal Laboratory. Together with the GI Lab team he is involved in several research projects that aim on developing new modalities for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases in small animal patients. The GI Lab collaborates with dozens of veterinarians and researchers from the USA as well as overseas, making it an unique institution with worldwide impact on veterinary gastroenterology. During his PhD here at Texas A&M University, Dr. Suchodolski has developed new molecular approaches to characterize for the first time the tremendous microbial diversity present within the canine intestinal tract. Those findings are helpful in understanding the role of bacteria and fungi in the development of intestinal disease, and may help in identifying therapeutic approaches in the future. Dr. Suchodolski is continuing to study intestinal microbial ecology as his research focus, and he is training Texas A&M graduate, veterinary, and undergraduate students in this new and exciting field.
